Venus: show me the love, show me the money!
Almost everybody knows what their “star sign” is. But this is, technically speaking, a misnomer: the sign of the zodiac which is associated with the day of the year you were born on is in fact your Sun sign. This simply means that it is the sign of the zodiac the Sun was passing through on the day you were born. Following so far? Bear with me, there’s more to come!
In astrology, we consider at least nine other planets in addition to the Sun when analysing a birth chart. (Ok, I know the Sun isn’t technically a planet, but let’s not quibble here!) And in addition to the sign each planet is in, astrologers also consider what house each planet in its sign is in, and how the relationship between the planet in question and the other nine looks … Astrology really is a complex subject!
Back to Venus. Venus in astrology is the planet which represents love. It’s what we value, how we try to achieve harmony and balance in our lives. It governs our attitudes towards wealth, how we acquire it and what we do with it. (Wealth of course can be spiritual, as well as the more basic “M” word – our attitude to money.) It follows that the planet of love and harmony also shows how we form relationships on all levels, from mad passionate soul mate bonds to the way we interact with the guy in the corner shop. Venus in each sign does these things in a different way, but broadly speaking, we can split Venus signs into four categories, according to the element the sign comes under.
Venus in Air Signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius)
People with Venus in an air sign achieve rapport with others through communication and ideas. They are motivated to socialise in an environment which is intellectually stimulating to them and need a constant flow back and forth of conversation and ideas to keep their interest going. Venus in Gemini needs lots of friends from a spectrum of backgrounds to keep them stimulated. They value variety and exchange and will flit from one subject to another, one friend to another, so don’t expect to hold their full attention for long! Venus in Libra people are consummate diplomats, and can pour calm on troubled waters in any social situation. They value relationships, would never say anything to hurt another person, and dread communication breakdown or arguments. Venus in Aquarius sees the bigger picture and values truth and fair play. These people are good in groups (much better than one to one) and can potentially be pioneers for social change.
Venus in Earth signs (Virgo, Taurus, Capricorn)
Earth-Venus people relate best with others when it feels right, so they won’t call just anyone their friend! Once they do, however, they’re steadfast friends and tend to form lasting relationships. Venus in Virgo people can be particularly picky about who they form relationships with in the first instance, but once you’re classed as a friend, they’ll do all they can to help you in your hour of need. People with Venus in Taurus are loyal friends, who value beautiful objects, and a good gourmet meal as the backdrop for a catch up. Money is also important to them, not for reasons of greed, but because of the physical security it brings. Venus in Capricorn people tend to be cautious and reserved in their relating patterns, and are very astute at forming beneficial business relationships. Walt Disney, renowned for his business savvy, had this Venus placement. Underneath the fantasy of his films and cartoons Walt’s Capricorn attitude to contacts and money definitely paid off big time.
Venus in Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius)
With Venus in a fire sign, you’re the kind of person who likes being with people who inspire you. You need others to “light your fire” if you’re going to forge a serious relationship with them. You like your social encounters to be spontaneous and full of energy, and you’re probably not averse to the odd flare up from time to time – it just keeps the fire burning! Venus in Aries likes nothing more than to be a knight in shining armour to any damsel – or squire – in distress. In return, he or she will expect to be the centre of attention in the relationship and needs lots of adulation. Venus in Sagittarius is a real party animal, and doesn’t much care who you are as long as you can keep up the dancing all night! Just like Venus in the other two fire signs, Venus in Leo loves to be the centre of attention, but probably even more so. He or she values loyalty and trust and expects this from lovers, friends and colleagues alike.
Venus in Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces)
When Venus is in a water sign, relating and networking is an experience which works best when it feels right, as for the earth signs. However, whereas the earthy Venus seeks security in relationships, the watery Venus wants to merge with the other person, to feel where they’re coming from, to empathise. Venus in Cancer relates in a very caring and nurturing way. This is someone who wants to make you cups of tea, feed you, look after you. He or she is very sensitive, too, so take extra care not to be too rough with their feelings. Venus in Pisces can scale the heights or plum the depths in relationships, being comfortable associating with the whole spectrum from saints through to sinners. Venus in Scorpio likes intense, one to one relationships best, and can bear a grudge for years then take revenge when you least expect it – witness Edwina Curry’s shock revelations about her affair with former lover John Major years after the fact.
