UK Election and Becks comes of Age!

Hello, and Welcome to New Moon Messenger!

This month I’d like to share some thoughts about the possible state of mind of the nation’s Prime Minister following the election. In addition, did you realise David Beckham may have only just become an adult? Read on to find out more!

New Moon, New Government

This month’s New Moon, on May 8th, follows hot on the heels of a General election. As I explained in last month’s edition, New Moons are all about new beginnings, quite appropriate as this one coincides with a new governmental term. In the run up to elections, Astrologers worldwide join the ranks of many other pundits in passing comment on what colour the winner’s rosette will be before the event: but there are many factors to take into account.

An election is a process which affects not just individuals (the party leaders), but the political parties they belong to, the regions they represent, as well as the wider national and international collective. Each of these bodies has a chart (at least one in the case of a country!) which is unique to that entity and which will be under varying influences from the planets at election time. So predicting who’ll win the election for astrologers is no less complicated and tricky than for any political analyst or media reporter, with the welter of statistical information and analysis they have at their fingertips.

What astrologers can see more easily, however, is how individuals might be feeling around election time on a personal level, by looking at the major influences affecting their birth charts. Tony Blair certainly has a lot on his plate at the moment, in more ways than one. The huge responsibilities he has as leader of the government and the battle he’s had to retain his position are reflected in his chart. He is at a peak in his life, a time when he should be achieving his ambitions – if he has laid the correct foundations in previous years. However, he will be questioning past decisions and trying to fight the inevitable challenges which come for any Prime Minister at a time like this. He is likely to be questioning who he can trust, and may have to take some tough decisions about who he should place his loyalties with moving forward. He’s also bound to be having doubts as to whether decisions he’s taken since mid-2004 have been the right ones … On top of which, it seems on a personal level he should be laying foundations for the future in terms of his home and family life, which is in need of some attention. He needs to put in work in this area if it is to move forward in a positive way for him in years to come. Whatever is in store for the Labour party, their leader needs to be very clear about what sacrifices he is willing to make right now, both in his political and his personal life.

Becks comes of age!

Football star and fashion icon David Beckham celebrated his 30th birthday on May 2nd this year. In footballing terms, this puts him well on the road to retirement, past the youthful exuberance of his 20’s, which by most people’s standards have been very successful. He’s got the money, the celebrity wife, the family, the media attention … a comfortable position for a security-seeking Taurus Sun to be in. But although Becks is now on the “thirty-something” track, he’s a spring chicken in astrological terms. This is because he only experienced what is termed his “Saturn return” in the middle of 2004, so he’s only just become an adult!

Saturn in astrology represents structure, authority, restriction, boundaries and responsibility. It’s what gives us our sense of right and wrong – or at least what lines we are fearful of crossing. Although this represents something subtly different for each person depending on where Saturn lies in the birth chart, its cycle corresponds with key developmental stages throughout our lives. As Saturn takes approximately 29 years (give or take several months) to do one circuit of the zodiac, we will all experience the return at around the same age. At this age, as we leave the carefree attitude of our 20’s behind, we suddenly start to realise that we are now responsible for ourselves, the structure of our lives, and the way we continue to live from this point forward. This is our true coming of age. And although some people may be happy about the choices they’ve made up to that point, many of us have a major wobble around the Saturn return.

The question “is this how I want my life to be” can prompt many reactions, even if we’re not conscious of asking it of ourselves. For this reason, the time running up to our 30th birthday may see us making drastic changes. For instance, making a greater commitment to a partner via marriage. Or the opposite: some people suddenly feel unfulfilled and unable to carry on in their relationships, perhaps deciding to divorce. This time may also bring a change in career direction as the realisation dawns that the path previously taken is not appropriate to our circumstances or our ambitions. New responsibility in the form of a pregnancy or birth can also transform our life, our attitudes and priorities. Interestingly in the case of David Beckham, he does seem to have been making an attempt to break out from the structure and responsibilities he had taken on up to that point. It was only a couple of months before Saturn returned to its exact birth placement when news of an affair with Rebecca Lewes broke – having an affair being classic Saturn return behaviour. Whether this reported affair was a minor indiscretion or a symptom of a deeper dissatisfaction with his life, he was forced at the time to examine where his responsibilities lay and whether he wanted to take them on into the next Saturn cycle. His decision appears to have been that there was too much at stake to risk losing. Time will tell whether he and his family can put this behind them, and whether he can move forward into the next Saturn cycle on a solid footing. His decisions now will also affect how well he copes with his second – yes, there’s another one! – Saturn return around the age of 58-59.

The cycles of the planets bring different energies into our lives and have different effects for each individual. Saturn in your birth chart tells you where and how you’re being asked to take responsibility, and your Saturn return around 29-30 will reflect this.
